The Red Goblin gets on the soap box !!!!!
Fellow Redzzz, Bristolians, Countrymen. I feel honoured to have been requested to submit an article for this magnificent online Bristol City FC supporters' magazine.
I'm known to most of you as a political gobshite with a strong admiration for Oliver Cromwell who did his bit for the people of Bristol during the late summer of 1645 in helping liberate Bristol from Prince Rupert's occupying Royalist army. It was to be just under 250 years later in 1887 that the people of Bristol were again liberated from suffering yet another terrible tyranny - this time the prospect of enduring Gas football for the whole of eternity. For it was in 1887 that 'Southville FC' was formed - Southville being the oldest constituent football club of BCFC. Southville went on to become 'Bedminster FC' who later merged with Bristol City FC who have now dominated the Bristol football scene for well over 100 years with The Gas almost always being relegated to being Bristol's second professional club during this whole period. I thus propose a toast of finest zider in salute our BS3 ancestors in South Bristol for founding Southville FC 1887 and Bristol South End FC 1894 and thus for making Bristol City FC the reality of today.
I, personally, didn't arrive on the BS3 scene until March 1965. Bristol City FC then got off to a magnificent winning start to mark my arrival in this world as on the 26th March 1965 it was BCFC 4 Grimsby Town 0, League Division 3, Attendance 11,464. That game must have been played on a Friday and I was but just 4 days old. BCFC then went on to gain promotion that season to the second tier of English football. I can thus boast that I was born within a BCFC promotion season - what a great start in life !!!!!!!!
Today we see the very real prospect of a third return to top flight football under the fine stewardship of Gary Johnson with the backing of our Chairman Steve Lansdown. These are truely great and exciting times to be a Bristol City FC supporter and I now live more in expectation than hope for our long awaited return to the top flight of English football where I believe this football club and its supporters rightly belong.
Up the City - "Hasta La Victoria Siempre!" - Keep fighting for the victory of BCFC top flight football !!!!!!!
